Mathematical Ineligibility - Part 2
This is Part 2 of my look at when the point of Mathematical ineligibility is Formula E Seasons and this post will look at Seasons 7-9 and Part 3 (looking at Seasons 10-12) will come after I have reviewed the 2026 Hankook London ePrix. The decision to do this way is twofold: 1; When recording the results according to the alternative points format, I did not note who the leaders of the championships were as well as their totals so I have go back through and work out when the point of Mathematical ineligibility occurs and this is time-consuming, 2; We do not know who Season 12 champions are (exception being the Manufacturers' Championship in real life) so it would be incomplete to not include it and too short of a blog post include only Season 12.

There are no sporting changes between this season and the previous season and this is true for both formats.
Alternative Format
For the Overall Drivers' Championship, the point of Mathematical ineligibility is after race 1 of the London ePrix, the 12th race season. The leader at this point is Jean-Eric Vergne, who leads with 90 points and he goes on to win the championship with 111 points. However, Jean-Eric loses the lead after the next race and only reclaims it after the dramatic accident for Mitch Evans and Edoardo Mortara at the start of the final race.
For the Customer Trophy for Drivers Championship, the point of Mathematical ineligibility is after race 2 of the Puebla ePrix, the 9th race of the season. The leader at this point is Robin Frijns, who leads with 152 points and goes on to win the championship with 249 points, sealing it with a race to spare.
For the Nelson Piquet Jr Trophy Championship, the point of Mathematical ineligibility is after race 1 of the New York City ePrix, the 10th race of the season. The leader at this point id Nick Cassidy, who leads with 129 points before going on to win the trophy with final points total of 207 points.
For the Overall Teams' Championship, the point of Mathematical ineligibility is after race 2 of the New York City ePrix, the 11th race of the season. The leader at this point is DS Techeetah with 162 points and they go on to win the Overall Teams' Championship with 202 points. However, they do not maintain this lead throughout the remaining races as Envision Virgin Racing briefly take the lead in the standings after race 2 of the London ePrix, but Techeetah take it back after the next race in Berlin.
For the Customer Teams' Championship, the point of Mathematical ineligibility is after race 1 of the Puebla ePrix, the 8th race of the season. The leader at this point is Envision Virgin Racing, who lead with 147 points and they go on to win the championship with 268 points.
For the Manufacturers' Cup, the point of Mathematical ineligibility is also after race 2 of the New York City ePrix, with DS Automobiles leading the championship with 182 points and they go on to win the Cup with 233 points.

For the Drivers' Championship, the point of Mathematical ineligibility is after race 2 of the London ePrix, the 13th race of the season. The leader at this point is Nyck de Vries with 95 points and he goes on to win the Drivers' Championship with final points total of 99.
For the Teams' Championship, the point of Mathematical ineligibility is after race 1 of the London ePrix, the 12th race of the season. DS Techeetah lead the standings at this point with 148 points, but do not go on to win the championship as instead it is Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team who win with 181 points, despite being 4th with 137 points at the point of Mathematical ineligibility. Mercedes are 5th going into the final race, but emerge the winner as they are only team inside the top 5 in the standings to have both cars finish inside the top 10 and the only one to have a car on the podium.
For the hypothetical Manufacturers' Cup, the point of Mathematical ineligibility would have been after race 2 of the New York City ePrix, the 11th race of the season. The leader at this point would have been Audi, who lead on 222 points but they would not ending up winning the championship if it had run as they lose it to Mercedes-Benz in the last race and they win the championship with 298 points. Mercedes-Benz were 2nd at the point of Mathematical ineligibility with 186 points and the deciding factor is the final race as the Audi-powered cars are uncompetitive and Mercedes-Benz walk away with a 1-3, meaning a 25 point deficit for Mercedes-Benz turns into a 9 point advantage in the span of 1 race.
For the Teams' Championship, the point of Mathematical ineligibility is after race 1 of the London ePrix, the 12th race of the season. DS Techeetah lead the standings at this point with 148 points, but do not go on to win the championship as instead it is Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team who win with 181 points, despite being 4th with 137 points at the point of Mathematical ineligibility. Mercedes are 5th going into the final race, but emerge the winner as they are only team inside the top 5 in the standings to have both cars finish inside the top 10 and the only one to have a car on the podium.
For the hypothetical Manufacturers' Cup, the point of Mathematical ineligibility would have been after race 2 of the New York City ePrix, the 11th race of the season. The leader at this point would have been Audi, who lead on 222 points but they would not ending up winning the championship if it had run as they lose it to Mercedes-Benz in the last race and they win the championship with 298 points. Mercedes-Benz were 2nd at the point of Mathematical ineligibility with 186 points and the deciding factor is the final race as the Audi-powered cars are uncompetitive and Mercedes-Benz walk away with a 1-3, meaning a 25 point deficit for Mercedes-Benz turns into a 9 point advantage in the span of 1 race.
In real life, a change in qualifying format to the format we currently use means a slight change to the maximum points available. Now, if you top the group stage you are no longer awarded an extra point, so the maximum points available for a race is back down to 29.

Alternative Format
For the Overall Drivers' Championship, the point of Mathematical ineligibility is after race 1 of the New York City ePrix, the 11th race of the season. The leader at this point is Stoffel Vandoorne, who leads with 145 points and goes on to win the championship with a race to spare and 221 points. Points-wise, the point of Mathematical ineligibility should come in after qualifying for race 1 of the New York City ePrix as Jean-Eric Vergne has 137 points which is exactly the amount of points available, but because he had yet to win at that point you could rank ahead of him as you would have the better finishes (5 wins to his 0).
For the Customer Trophy for Drivers Championship, the point of Mathematical ineligibility is after the Jakarta ePrix, the 9th race of the season. The leader at this point is Robin Frijns, who leads with 146 points and would go on to win the Customer Trophy for Drivers with 247 points.
For the Nelson Piquet Jr Trophy Championship, the point of Mathematical ineligibility is also after the Jakarta ePrix, with Oliver Askew the leader of the class standings with 170 points. Oliver would win the Trophy, but Sergio Sette Camara gets close despite Oliver winning 10 races overall, including 7 of the first 9.
For the Overall Teams' Championship, the point of Mathematical ineligibility is also after race 1 of the New York City ePrix, with ROKiT Venturi Racing leading the standings with 232 points, but do not win the Teams' Championship as instead it would go to Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team, who wins with 336 points. Mercedes were 2nd at the point of Mathematical ineligibility with 227 points and win the title thanks to strong results from both of their drivers while Venturi has 2 DNFs in the next 5 races.
For the Customer Teams' Championship, the point of Mathematical ineligibility is also after the Jakarta ePrix, with ROKiT Venturi Racing leading the championship with 161 points. They would defend this lead and win with a race to spare and 293 points.
For the Manufacturers' Cup, the point of Mathematical ineligibility is after the Marrakesh ePrix, the 10th race of the season. The leader at this point is DS Automobiles, who lead with 264 points but it is Mercedes-Benz who win the Cup with a race to spare and 408 points. They were 2nd at the point of Mathematical ineligibility with 243 points and they are able to completely overhaul DS Automobiles as over the next 4 races (New York City ePrix doubleheader and London ePrix doubleheader) both of their cars finish top 5 in the manufacturer class, while DS Automobiles have 3 top 5s in that timespan.

The differing factor is sheer results as Jake would finish 4 of the last 5 races on the podium (the other finish is 4th) while the best finish for Pascal in that same span is 7th.
For the Customer Trophy for Drivers Championship, the point of Mathematical ineligibility is after the Monaco ePrix, the 9th race of the season. The leader at this point is Nick Cassidy with 151 points, but he doesn't go on to win the championship as instead Jake Dennis takes it instead with 255 points and was 3rd at this point with 124 points. Jake's success is down to great results from him (finishes no lower than 2nd in class in the last 7 races) and bad results from Nick (Rome 2 and London 1).

This means that the eventual winner of the trophy is Dan Ticktum who seals the championship with a race to spare and a final points total of 242, despite being 3rd at the point of Mathematical ineligibility with 132 points.

They do not not win the Overall Teams' Championship this season as instead it goes to Envision Racing who were 2nd at the point of Mathematical ineligibility with 207 points. Envision' winning points total is 311 and their victory is down to better results as despite 2 DNFs for their star driver Nick Cassidy, they win twice in the final 5 races while Porsche's best finish in that time frame is a singular 3rd in Portland.

Envision have a car on the podium in 3 of the final 4 races and only thrice does a Envision car fail to score points (Sebastien Buemi DNFs from Rome 1 and Nick Cassidy finishes 14th in Rome 2 and DNFs in London 1), while Porsche's best finish is 7th from Pascal and Antonio doesn't score any points in those final 4 races.
